Trekking in Bhutan is paradise for
walkers of all levels and BTCL has many years of experience
arranging a wide variety of treks. Unlike trekking in other parts
of the Himalayas, Bhutan has made hospitality for hikers an art
form. With equipment being carried on ponies and by porter,
trekkers are able to extend all their energy on getting as much as
they possibly can from the walk itself. |
BTCL staff do everything that is possible
to make the trek easier. Individual tents are set up at each camp site
and full meals are prepared, using food that is carried or food that can
be found in the nearby environs. The support team will pack up the
campsite after you set off in the morning and race ahead of you during
the day so a welcome cup of tea is ready in the dining tent when you
arrive, tired but content after a long day's walk. During the trek your
guide will carry and provide refreshment whenever necessary and will
even carry you across deeper streams if necessary. Trekking in the
Himalayas is not for the fainthearted or the unfit. Walking up to six to
eight hours a day over ranges as high as 18,000 feet, it can be an
arduous and even dangerous adventure. It is critical that trekkers are
aware of the difficulties involved.

Walking is the traditional, and, many say,
the best way to see Bhutan. A two hour walk East from
Tashiyangtse village, or trekking to Jhomolhari basecamp, or
a four day Bumthang
trek will reveal hidden treasures of a life that many
visitors have never seen before.

| imalayan festivals have long
reputations for being raucous, joyous affairs. Bhutan is no
exception. Residents of the valley prepare for months in
advance and wear their finest kira and kho; they come from
far and wide to celebrate in the valley's dzong. The
festivals last for several days and the partying goes on for
as long as the festivities. Colorful costumes, mask dances,
processions and music performed by monks and laymen playing
exotic Himalayan instruments are only part of the fun. |
 |
Dzongs are open to all, foreigners and
locals, for the duration of the festival. The highlight of most
Bhutanese Tsechus is the unveiling of the dzong's thongdrel, a massive
hand-embroidered appliqué with a religious subject. The thongdrel are
unveiled at first light to bring enlightenment to all who view them and
are only displayed once a year for a few hours at a time.
